Hawthorn & Munro

Hawthorn & Munro Building

7 Papakura-Clevedon Road
Trail marker #19

Hawthorn & Munro’s Butchery (estd. 1906) opened on this site in 1936, having previously been located at the Papakura end of the main street.

The building became the headquarters of a thriving business with additional butcher shops operating in Papakura, Manurewa and Papatoetoe, an abattoir on East Road (now Monument Road) in Clevedon and contributing stock farms there and in Ardmore. The office, located on the northern side of the building, is now Clevedon Takeaways.

“Clevedon was the base from where goods and services went out on a wide circuit. In his early years with the business, Charles Munro took a hawking cart around the outlying districts. Among lasting impressions was his experience up at the isolated community of Moumoukai, said his daughter. He spoke of ‘the lonely women at home with the children on the farmlets, caring for children and animals when the menfolk were away working on the roads, or some at the goldfields getting money to keep things going.”

Hawthorn & Munro gave regular employment to 12 or more people until it closed in 1958.

The information for each site has been thoughtfully prepared in collaboration with the Clevedon Districts Historical Society, drawing on Voices of Belonging by Jessie Munro, Yesteryears by F. Murray, and records from the McNicol Homestead Museum. Together, they tell the story of Clevedon and the people and places that made it the community we know today.

A special acknowledgement to photographer Donna Jepsen for her work capturing these sites as they appear today.
